2 Bells of Last Supper Discourse
Bell #1: Our Faith Future. What happens after this life?
Bell #2: Our Faith Now. How do I navigate today?
John 13:36 – 14:1-11 (NIV) 36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” 37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! 14:1“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.
3 Questions
• Peter asks - Where are you going?
• Thomas asks - How will we get there?
• Philip asks - Can you give us a sign to help us trust you?
Question #1
Peter asks - Where are you going?
36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” 37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
14:1“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Our trouble doesn’t void God’s promises.
The biggest promise God makes is that there is a better life after this life.
Heaven is living in the freedom and fulfillment of the “face-to-face” real-time presence of God our Father, the Creator of the Universe.
Heaven is going to be a far better experience than any of our physical expectations. Streets of gold sound very fanciful, but I think the point is that gold there will not garner any more attention than asphalt here.
A Christian’s belief in and understanding of God is anchored in the reality of Jesus.
Jesus’ coming back has 3 rings:
• Ring #1: He will leave them in death but will resurrect and come back to them in life.
• Ring #2: He will come back to them by sending His Spirit to them when He departs.
• Ring #3: He will come back for them when His Father sends Him to wrap up this drama, which began in Genesis 1.
Question #2
Thomas asks - How will we get there?
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Jesus redirects Thomas’ fear of not knowing how to get to the next with who he knows in the moment: Jesus.
Jesus Himself is the way – the direction and the Destination.
Jesus Himself is the Truth –the standard for all information and the Truth.
Jesus Himself is life – the source of life and the Life we are after.
Question #3
Philip asks - Can you give us a sign to help us trust you?
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”9Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.
The disciples had the most personal, face-to-face, real-time experience with God of anyone ever, but they still had trouble seeing Him for who He was.
Recap
Our Faith Future is Heaven.
The promise of heaven keeps our “eyes on the horizon.”
“You cannot depend on your natural senses when flying on instruments, you must put your trust in the instruments or the outcome will be fatal… “ - Captain Buddy Ross
“There is an important reason why this is the first thing we teach in primary flight instruction to new pilots. If a student pilot is unable to grasp this concept they will never successfully nor safely pilot an airplane.” - Captain Allen Sylvester
“Keeping your eyes on heaven levels out your wings right now!” - Pastor Charlie Weir
Recap
Our Faith Now is Jesus’ Trustworthiness.
“I was a bit nervy and mechanical at first but over time the drive came very natural to me. My sense of adventure mostly outstripped my fear of getting lost.”
Fly enough hours and you get more confident in your ability to fly. Trust Jesus enough times and the times become easier to trust Jesus.
