How to Fast
So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer. Ezra 8:23
What is Fasting?
Fasting is the practice of setting something aside—often food or distractions—to focus your heart more fully on God. It helps quiet the noise, awaken spiritual hunger, and create space to hear His voice with greater clarity. As we fast, we learn to depend on God in deeper ways and experience His presence meeting us right where we are.
Fast Models
The goal of fasting is to draw near to God. It hits the reset button of our soul and renews us from the inside out.
Total Fast
A complete fast typically involves only liquids for a set period of time. This type of fast is seen throughout Scripture and should be approached with wisdom and clarity of purpose. It is a focused way of seeking God with your whole heart and relying fully on His strength.
Selective Fast
A selective fast removes specific elements from your diet, such as meats, sweets, caffeine, or processed foods. The Daniel Fast falls into this category—focusing on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and water. These kinds of fasts help create intentional space to seek God while still sustaining daily responsibilities.
Partial Fast
Sometimes called a "Jewish Fast," this fast involves abstaining from food for certain hours of the day—commonly from sunup to sundown. It establishes a daily rhythm of hunger that redirects your heart toward prayer, dependence, and gratitude
Soul Fast
A soul fast sets aside non‑food distractions—such as social media, entertainment, or habits that consume your attention. This fast is especially helpful for those who need a reset from noise or digital overload, replacing those inputs with Scripture, worship, and stillness before God.
Each January, our church family sets aside 21 days to seek God through prayer and fasting. Since Gateway began, this season has helped us focus our hearts and prepare for what God wants to do. But you don’t have to wait for January—any moment can become a starting point to draw near to Him.
If you're ready to begin, the Planning Your Fast Card offers a clear and practical way to choose your fast, set your prayer focus, and prepare your heart for what God wants to do.

-
Fast for a set period of time—whether a meal, a day, or several days. Start small and grow as God leads.
-
Fasting together as a family is a great way to grow closer to God and each other. By design, fasting disrupts our patterns and routines, and in the context of a family, those disruptions will affect those we live with. However, when a family decides to fast together, it creates a great opportunity for family discipleship.
-
We were all new at some point! Begin simple. Choose one area to lay down and use that space to talk with God.
