Gratitude Sunday

The Eucharist

Colossians 3:14-20 (NIV) 14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen


Paul’s prayer was for the Ephesian church and us …

  • to grasp the unfathomable scope of Jesus’ love

  • to know Jesus’ unknowable love

  • to be filled up with the fullness of God.

We can have confidence in Jesus doing this for us because He is an immeasurably more God.

Eucharist

  • Eu – good or well

  • Charis – grace or favor

It literally means “an action of good grace” (good grief) or receiving a “well-favored state”. 

The gift of salvation was freely given without coercion or hesitancy. Jesus bestows “well-favored” status on those who will receive His Good Grace. 

Our circumstances, whether easy or hard, do not lessen the impact of the cross. They do not drain it of one ounce of power, nor overshadow the impact of the blood of Jesus.


Matthew 26:26-30 (NIV)
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
