Fake News: I Am Not Good Enough

Sermon Notes

The Truth About Lies

  • The origin of lies is Satan.

  • The power of a lie is in what we do with it.

  • The intent of a lie is to control and destroy.

  • The power of truth is inherent in the reality of Jesus.

  • The impact of this Truth in my life is dependent on my acceptance of Him.

  • The intent of Truth is freedom and life.

10,000ft observations…

  1. Each of us have spent a lifetime learning it.

  2. It’s an easy default when we fail.

  3. It quickly moves from an assessment (performance) to an indictment (value).

Defeating the “I am not good enough” lie is not a “one and done” endeavor. It takes a life time of consistent presence and repetition of the Truth.

“I am not good enough.” word by word…

  • I am not… this a negative identity statement.

  • I am not good… this a negative evaluation statement.

    Genesis 1:24-31
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

  • I am not good enough… this a negatively comparative stance.

    Galatians 6:4-5 AMP
But each one must carefully scrutinize his own work [examining his actions, attitudes, and behavior], and then he can have the personal satisfaction and inner joy of doing something commendable without comparing himself to another. For every person will have to bear [with patience] his own burden [of faults and shortcomings for which he alone is responsible].

The two most fundamental streams from which this lie flows are Performance & Value.

Proverbs 23:7
As a man or woman thinks in their heart, so are they.

The I am not good enough lie starts with a failure of our hands which wounds our hearts that rewrites code in our minds.

“Good Facts”

Fact: You will not be good at everything.

Fact: Someone will always be better at what you want to be the best.

Fact: If you have to be the best at something to participate you will have a very narrow range of interests and a very narrow range of friends.

Fact: You are good at more things than you realize. God wired you for good.

Fact: The sooner you stop comparing yourself to others, the sooner you will realize what you are good at.

“Can” your way to healed relationships

  • You can own your past even though you can’t rewrite your past.

  • You can ask forgiveness.

  • You can start over from where you are.

None of these “cans” are dependent on anyone other than you.

Romans 8:1-17
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. 12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

If you allow yourself to get distracted from the cross you will get distracted from your value and be susceptive to lies.

Hebrews 12:2
For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

1. Endured.

2. Shame.

3. Joy.

4. Finished.

The Cross

  • The cross determines our value. Satan will always try to hide the cross.

  • Value is not determined by performance.

  • We fight this battle with the Truth of God’s Word, The Righteousness of Jesus & The Assurance of our Salvation
