Rock Solid: Introduction

Luke 6 Matthew 6

January 7th 2024

Resolutions fail because…

  • They lack process steps. The difference between a goal and a dream is a plan.

  • Costs aren’t counted. One opportunity comes at the cost of another opportunity.

  • Prices aren’t paid. There are no shortcuts to worthwhile goals.

Rock-Solid

Luke 6:46-49 46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

4 Rock-Solid Observations

  1. Jesus defines relationship by actions.

  2. Rock Solid foundations take deep digging.

  3. Floods happen to everyone and cause real damage.

  4. Lives rise or fall based on foundations.

1. Jesus defines relationship by actions.

The Message 46-47 “Why are you so polite with me, always saying ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘That’s right, sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on.

There are plenty of people who have a “Jesus and” faith who think they have a faith in Jesus. What’s the difference? One lives by the words of God the other adds and subtracts from those words at their preference and obey certain words at their convenience.

Pastor Charlie’s Glass Board

  1. Never be afraid of the repercussions of telling the Truth in Love. One of those repercussions is freedom.

  2. Never underestimate the power of a simple prayer offered on behalf of a complex situation.

  3. Never short-sell the value of obedience.

1 Samuel 15:22-23b “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.”

The depth of our relationship with God is determined by the degree of our obedience to His word.

2. Rock Solid foundations take deep digging.

The Message: 48-49 “If you work the words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who dug deep and laid the foundation of his house on bedrock.

3 Layers to Dig Deep Through

Topsoil

Rock

Spoiled Soil

It takes some digging, blasting and excavating to get the weak, stubborn and spoiled elements out of our life so we can build our life on Rock Solid.

3. Floods happen to everyone and cause real damage.

The Message: When the river burst its banks and crashed against the house, nothing could shake it; it was built to last.

Storm level winds and water are inevitability – but following Jesus’ words keeps us standing rock-solid.

4. Lives rise or fall based on foundations.

The Message: But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a dumb carpenter who built a house but skipped the foundation. When the swollen river came crashing in, it collapsed like a house of cards. It was a total loss.”

Rock-Solid Clarity

We have two options:

1) Dig Deep (Hear and Obey)

2) Fall Hard (Hear and go our own way).

Matthew 6 is a dig deep primer.

Jesus gives us 4 places to start digging.

  • Give First

  • Pray First

  • Fast First

  • Worry Never.
