Renewal 2022: Worship

Renewal 2022

Worship

Pastor Charlie Weir

Renewal is something we receive not achieve.

Isaiah 40:27-31 Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, “My way is  hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”? 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the  earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even  youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who  hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they  will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Psalm 100 1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with  gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he  who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his  gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his  faithfulness continues through all generations.

1. Worship as catechism

  • Worship “learns” me.

  • Worship connects my head to my Lord

  • Worship renews my mind

Colossians 3:1-3Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts  on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds  on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden  with Christ in God. Clearly, Paul is teaching these believers how to live differently  than they lived before their saving encounter with Jesus. Then in verse 16 of the  same chapter He gives us a path to do that. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among  you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through  psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your  hearts.

2. Worship as celebration.

  • Worship lifts me.

  • Worship connects my heart to my head to my Lord

  • Worship renews my spirit

2 Samuel 6:12-23 12 Now King David was told, “The LORD has blessed the  household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So  David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of  David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had  taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen  ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, 15 while he and all  Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets. 16 As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul  watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before  the LORD, she despised him in her heart. 17They brought the ark of the LORD and set  it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt  offerings and fellowship offerings before the LORD. 18 After he had finished  sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the  name of the LORD Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a  cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and  women. And all the people went to their homes. 20 When David returned home to  bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How  the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full  view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!” 21 David said to  Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone  from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD’s people Israel—I will  celebrate before the LORD. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I  will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be  held in honor.” 23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her  death.

3. Worship as courage.

  • Worship leads me forward to God’s victory.

  • Worship connects my feet to my heart to my head to my Lord

  • Worship renews my path

2 Chronicles 20:4-30 4 The people of Judah came together to seek help from  the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him. 5 Then  Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of  the LORD in the front of the new courtyard 6 and said: “LORD, the God of our  ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of  the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you. 7 Our  God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and  give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend? 8 They have lived in it  and have built in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying, 9 ‘If calamity comes upon us,  whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence  before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and  you will hear us and save us.’ 10 “But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and  Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came  from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them. 11 See how  they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an  inheritance. 12 Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this  vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on  you.”13 All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood  there before the LORD. 14 Then the Spirit of the LORD came on Jahaziel son of  Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and  descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly. 15 He said: “Listen, King  Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says  to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is  not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing  up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm  and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be  afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be  with you.’” 18 Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the  people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD. 19 Then some  Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God  of Israel, with a very loud voice. 20 Early in the morning they left for the Desert of  Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people  of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith  in his prophets and you will be successful.” 21After consulting the people,  Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor  of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: “Give thanks to  the LORD, for his love endures forever.” 22As they began to sing and praise,  the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who  were invading Judah, and they were defeated. 23 The Ammonites and Moabites rose  up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they  finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another. 24 When  the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked toward the  vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped. 25 So  Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them  a great amount of equipment and clothing and also articles of value—more than they  could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it. 26 On  the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berakah, where they praised the LORD.  This is why it is called the Valley of Beraka to this day. 27 Then, led by Jehoshaphat,  all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had  given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. 28 They entered Jerusalem and went  to the temple of the LORD with harps and lyres and trumpets (worship). 29 The fear of  God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the LORD had  fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at  peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.
