Sermon Notes

John 8:31b,32 “Jesus said, If you hold to my teachings you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

God’s priority is our freedom.

Galatians 5:1 states, It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

2 Major Things Are Working Against Our Spiritual Freedom

1. SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS:

2 Corinthians 4:4The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

2. SPIRTUAL INGNORANCE:

Proverbs 14:12 (NAS) There is a way which seems right to a man and appears straight before him, But its end is the way of death.

Jesus is in the Freedom BIZ

In Luke 4:16-2116 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lords favor.  20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, Today this scripture is fullfilled in your hearing.

“Fasting is giving up food for a specified time for a specific spiritual purpose. Fasting starves our physical cravings in order to feed our spiritual needs.”

5 Contexts For Fasting

1. In the Face of Danger

Jehoshaphat - 2 Chronicles 20:1-3

After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat. 2 Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar(that is, En Gedi).3 Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. 4 The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.

Esther 4:14b “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this.”

2. In the Need for Repentance

Jonah 3:10 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.”

3. To Establish Identity

Daniel 1

4. In Need of Breakthrough

Daniel 10

5. To establish position and solidify power

Luke 4 - Jesus’ 40 day fast

  1. Fasting breaks strongholds
  2. Fasting is a normal and necessary spiritual practice

  • Jehoshaphat 1 Day: The enemy is on your door step

  • Esther 3 Day: Danger is imminent

  • Daniel 10 Day: You need to reestablish your spiritual identity

  • Daniel 21 Day: You need breakthrough. You feel/sense or are in the middle of opposition to God’s plan for your life
